ANNOUNCES 33rd SEASON

Hip Pocket Theatre's Artistic Director Johnny Simons has announced the 33rd season, opening June 5 at the Silver Creek Amphitheatre.

June 5-28
HOWL by Allen Ginsberg
Adapted & Directed by Johnny Simons
Originally published by City Lights Books in the fall of 1956, and subsequently seized by US Customs and the San Francisco police, HOWL was the subject of a long court trial at which a series of poets and professors persuaded the court that the book was not obscene. An ensemble of actors perform Ginsberg's poem unexpurgated.  "I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked. . . . . ."

July 10 - 26
The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran
Adapted and directed by Johnny Simons
Published in 1923, Gibran's masterpiece has been translated into more than 20 languages,and the American editions alone have sold more than nine million copies. Cadenced and vibrant with feeling, the words bring to one's ears the majestic rhythm of Ecclesiastes.

August 7 – 30
The Ugly brothers present a perfectly lovely play featuring the quiver sisters
and their pretty little ways
Written and directed by Johnny Simons
A gentle burlesque with music. Tad and Buck Ugly join forces with Minnie Quiver and her saucy sisters in this pantomimic romp!

 

August 31 - September 21
Cowtown Puppetry Festival
Various puppetry events, featuring the annual Puppet Pageant and Puppetry in Film (a weekend featuring a new mixed media offering from Chris Green), an excerpt from Rima Fand's and Erin K. Orr's"Don Cristobal,Billy Club Man."

 September 10 – 20
White Elephant
By Lake Simons and John Dyer

A meditation on transition, memory and release, featuring a series of poetic vignettes about animals, people, and objects transitioning from one place to another.  Brought to life through puppetry, movement, mask, super 8 film and live music.

October 2 – 24
A Princess of Mars (a Romance)
By Edgard Rice Burroughs
adapted and directed by Johnny Simons
with music by Michael H. Price

Suddenly projected to Mars, John Carter finds himself captive of the savage green men of Thark.  With him is Dejah Thoris, lovely princess of Helium.  Between them and rescue, a thousand miles of deadly enemies and unknown dangers await.

Z's Cafe will offer fresh, delicious catered foods, including sandwiches, salads,and desserts before and after performances.  Music in The Backyard continues, showcasing numerous North Texas musicians, including the house band  - The Lake Rats.
