Notes from Co-Creator, John Dyer
Thank you for joining us on our latest venture. We’re happy to share our new work with you in this special space. It always seems a relatively impossible task to put a show together from scratch in a matter of weeks, but again here we are with a show to share, thanks to our fantastic cast and crew…and maybe a touch of fairy dust. We all know something of Peter Pan. Our show is based on the story that most are familiar with (Peter and Wendy) which includes adventures with Tinker Bell, The Lost Boys, and Captain Hook but also on the book that preceded it - Peter Pan In Kensington Gardens (both by J.M. Barrie). I found a good bit of the writing from this earlier work to be particularly inspired and so have included in our staging a good bit from that text. This earlier book in tandem with some of the biographical info on Barrie’s childhood experiences serve as a kind of origin story for the character of Peter Pan. The show’s title is a nod to the mythic Pan, Greek god of wilderness and fertility, whose principal place of worship was rustic Arcadia. Of historical note is the fact that Barrie (age 6) lost his brother David (age 13) - very much their mother’s favored son - in a tragic accident. The result of their mother’s response to this loss left Barrie with a sense of maternal rejection. Life interrupted. Time standing still. Relations thrown. Growth stifled. A need for escape. I think in the end, the writing, the art itself, helped Barrie to process and heal. We have here a story of deliverance through imagination, and the creation of alternative family / community in the arts.

For the sweetest craft that slips her moorings in the Round Pond is what is called a stick-boat. - J.M. Barrie
